Task 2: Compare a Work of Lucia Hartini with a work of Another Surrealist Artist.

Kuda
100 x 100 CM
Acrylic on Canvas
Lucia Hartini

Optimism
16x20 oil on panel
Jim and Lynn Lemyre

Compare the two artworks in terms of techniques, use of colour and subject matter.

-Both Hartini and Jim and Lynn Lemyre used animals as their subject matter. In this case, both used the animal, horse. However, while Hartini rendered 2 horses, Jim and Lynn Lemyre used only 1.

-Hartini's choice of acrylic paints is different from Jim's and Lynn Lemyre's choice of oil paints used to render their artworks.

-Unlike Jim and Lynn Lemyre artwork, the texture of Hartini work is not as smooth as the brush strokes are short and choppy as seen in the illustration of the water. Jim and Lynn Lemyre artwork is smooth with little dabbing or sweeping of paintbrushes.

-Both art works portrayed the subjects realistically in terms of details, proportion and shadows. (making them a 3- dimensional art piece

-The colours rendered in both artworks are bold are pure. (e.g. the curtain in optimism and the horses in Kuda)

-The use of symbolism is evident in both artworks due to the use of horses as subject matters

Detailed 3

10 Things why this artwork is realistic
1. The use of local colour which portrays accurately the actual skin colour and tonal values.
2. Subject matter is rendered in miniscule detail, heightening the sense of reality. (creases on the lips, dark circles, water droplet at the tip of the nose )
3. The water droplets are portrayed realistically with the use of transparency and light.
4. There is no clear indication of brushstrokes or outlines in the painting.
5. The subject matter is portrayed in astonishing verisimilitude (imitation).
6. The effect of light and shadows gave the painting spatial depth.
7. The texture of the painting is smooth.
8. The subject matter is depicted proportionately and not exaggerated nor simplified.
9. The painting is balanced and does not defy the laws of gravity.
10. The painting is a situation that is seen in real life and not make-believe. (E.g. when one face a mirror after a bath)
